Topic Activities: The Plague

Challenge 1:

Compare the two pictures by Visscher and Reynolds between London in 1665

and London in 2016.

What things are the same? What things are different?

What does the fact that there are so many churches tell us about

religion in 1665?

Challenge 2:

Research all about the symptoms of the Plague.

Create a poster to explain the symptoms that someone might have if they

caught the plague.

Use this information to help you.

You could also use the information here for more details.

Challenge 3:

Find out about the nursery rhyme ‘Ring A Ring O Roses.’

What connection does it have to the Great Plague of London?

What were the rings of roses? Why did people have a pocket full of poses?

Why do you think that? Why did people ‘all fall down’?

More information here

Challenge 4:

Find out more about The Great Plague by using this PowerPoint and then

completing the reading comprehension here.

Challenge 5:

Create a timeline for The Great Plague.

You could use this website here or you could use this activity here.

Challenge 6:

Use this picture to explore what different people thought caused the Plague.

Which do you think is most likely? Which do you think MIGHT have been possible?

Are there any that you think are just plain silly? Why do you think that?

Today, you can let your imagine run wild! You are going to write a passage about another odd animal activity. Whether it is penguins at a restaurant or zebras skydiving, it is up to you! The wackier the better! Remember to look back at your work from this week to help you make it really interesting.

Your new challenge today is to create a forces leaflet using all the information you have learnt over the last week. You can also do your own research if you wish. You leaflet could even contain some photos of you conducting your experiments.

Here is a leaflet template if you would like to use it (print double sided if you can)  – click here for template.

I have also found a forces wordsearch you can do for a bit of fun! – click here for sheet.

Thursday 21st May

Good morning! How are you all?

I have attached another mindfulness activity for you to have a go at. It is about ‘worry’. I am definitely feeling some worry at the moment but thinking about it from a different perspective has helped. Why don’t you try it.

Continuing with the fabulous giraffes! Re-watch the video here - https://www.literacyshed.com/diving-giraffes.html

Topic –

Water resistance is very similar to air resistance, only in water.

Use the below link to research water resistance…

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zsxxsbk/articles/zxw6gdm (second half of video)

https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/class-clips-video/investigating-air-and-water-resistance/z4m6nrd

You can also do some of your own research if you wish.

After you have a good understanding of water resistance, you are challenged with designing the most effect boat ever. Think about the key words in the box below and have a go!

Want something extra?

Why don’t you make the boat out of household items and then test it in the sink or bath? Have fun!

Remember to contact someone at school before friday lunchtime!

Wednesday 20th May

Remember those giraffes?

https://www.literacyshed.com/diving-giraffes.html

I have always found swimming pools interesting places. The way sounds echo systematically around you, the smell of chlorine and the way the sunlight hits the water creating magical reflections that dance on the ceiling.

Your challenge today is to create a superb setting description using figurative language.

Here are a few help sheets and images to give you some ideas…

Air resistance

Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) was an Italian scientist and mathematician who wondered about this.

In 1590, he decided to carry out an investigation to find the answer.

He climbed to the top of the Leaning Tower of Pisa with two balls of similar shape and size, but with different masses.

He dropped both of the balls from the top of the tower at the same time. Both balls hit the ground at the same time.

Galileo's experiment proved that all objects fall at the same rate, no matter what their mass is.

But this can seem hard to believe!

Think about a feather and a hammer. If you dropped both objects at the same time, would they hit the ground at the same time?

Watch this video for some more information

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zsxxsbk/articles/zxw6gdm

You are going to do a small experiment to test out this theory.

You will make three parachutes and drop them from a height. Each of the three parachutes should be slightly different.

You will observe which of your parachutes falls the most slowly. This parachute will have the most air resistance pushing it up.

Construct your parachutes using a sheet of plastic or card. Tie or tape string to the corners, and tie or tape the four pieces of string to an object such as a toy figure, paper clip or piece of modelling clay.

Here is a sheet to help you start your experiment.

Topic –

Research time! A key aspect of being an inventor is doing research about the products that are already out there.

You will be creating a rollercoaster or ride for a bug theme park. Have you ever watched ‘A Bug’s Life’? No? Well go watch it’s amazing! Anyway bugs have a life of their own. They enjoy a rush of adrenaline. Efforts are being made in many different countries to create a bug theme park that people can install in their gardens to allow these tiny creatures to enjoy themselves.

You are going to join this effort.

Step 1 of the invention process – research

What rollercoaster/ rides are already out there? How were they built? What is special about them? What is included on a rollercoaster or ride? All these questions need answering. Maybe you can find some video clips about how a rollercoaster is made.

Write all your findings down in your exercise book to refer to later in the invention process. Or use the below sheet if you can.

Click here for ‘my rollercoaster research map’ – click here for sheet.

Monday 11th May

Good morning! Did you all enjoy VE day? Make sure you send photos of anything fun you did.

Have fun with these new challenges.

Topic –

This week you will be taking the lessons you have learnt about the famous scientists and inventors discussed and taking on the same role. You are now inventors!

Today, I want you to test you inventing brain. Go outside, collect as many sticks and twigs as you can find. Now create something. Anything. Small, large, unique or a replica. How are you going to do it? How are you going to join the pieces or are you going to use counterbalance?

PLEASE! Send me your photos. I want to see if we have any inventors among us.
