Challenge 1:

How many materials can you think of?

How many different materials can you see around you?

Go on a hunt around your house to find any more examples.

If you get stuck, here are some ideas to help.

Can you make groups for each material?

Are there any things that belong in more than one group? How come?

Challenge 2:

Why glass? Why do we use glass for our windows?

What is good about this? What is bad about this?

Write a list.

Should we continue using glass for our windows?

What else could we try? Would it work well?

Watch this video to find out more.

Challenge 3:

Think about what wood is like.

What words would you use to describe wood

to an alien from space who had never seen it before?!

Try this to help you.

Think about matching these materials (what they are) to their properties (what they are like)

Challenge 4:

Can you carry out a property testing experiment downloaded from here to identify which materials have certain properties?

Challenge 5:

Write a poem about all the things that are made out of one material.

Challenge 6:

Can you design and make an umbrella from materials around your house? Ask before you test it out. Take pictures and write sentences or a diary entry about what happened.

ENGLISH

YEAR 1

Hi year 1! Today is the last day on our information text. It's also spelling test day! Remind yourself of this weeks spellings (see below).

Now follow the link to today's lesson. Miss Browne will read out the spellings to you.

https://www.thenational.academy/year-1/english/to-continue-to-write-out-information-text-year-1-wk5-5

Once you've completed your spellings, you are going to continue to write your information text. You will need your information text map and yesterday's work to carry on with.

Watch Miss Browne's model and then say your own sentences out loud before writing them down. Remember to keep repeating the sentence until you have got it held in your head before writing it.

Once you have finished your writing, check it using the checklist below.

YEAR 2

Before you start, ask an adult to test you on your spellings.

Today, you are going to finish writing your Red Riding Hood story.

Read through the model below that I have written for you. Remember, your aim is to include lists so that you can make use of those commas. Can you spot where I have included them in my work?

She peeped into the dusky room. On the bed she could see her grandmother wearing a long pink nightgown, a frilly pink hat and a pair of glasses perched on the end of her nose.

“Hello Granny,” said Purple trotting in happily, “I’ve brought you some delicious goodies.”

She stepped closer to the bed, then stopped and peered at her Grandma.

“How enormous your nose looks today Granny!” she declared.

Granny grunted, “All the better to smell the flowers, the summer breeze and those delicious cakes you might be carrying.”

Now it's your turn! Write the end of your story. Make sure you include noun phrases, capital letters and full stops and lists with commas to separate the items in the list!

MINI ADVENTURE

Today we reach our final continent. The continent of South America. Can you find it on a map?

In South America, there are many amazing and world famous features. One of these is the Amazon Rain Forest.

Watch the Go Jetters as they explore it.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/class-clips-video/pshe-eyfs-ks1-go-jetters-continent-of-south-america/zjrbf4j

MATHS

YEAR 1

WARM UP

Play Numberbots for 15 minutes.

Today I would like you to apply your measuring skills to items around your house. Use the sheet to help you find and measure items or choose 5 items from around your house and measure them using a ruler.

You can print the sheet HERE

Record the measurements by drawing the item and then writing the measurement next to the picture (e.g. sock, 15cm). Once you have measured them, challenge yourself to put them in order. Can you order them from shortest to longest? Can you order them longest to shortest? Can you compare two of the items? e.g the scissors are shorter than the wooden spoon.

Once you’ve found and measured your items, why not have a go at the game below?

Measures Game

If you don’t have a dice, you can find an online one here

https://www.online-stopwatch.com/chance-games/roll-a-dice/

Follow the Oak National Academy link for today's lesson. You might need to use the Star Words below.

https://www.thenational.academy/year-1/english/to-start-to-write-our-information-text-year-1-wk5-4#slide-2

Once again, remember to look and listen to Miss Browne's example but use your own words when you write your version, don't copy her's exactly. Don't forget to use your capital letters, full stops and finger spaces!

If you get chance, please remember to email me some of your work. I love to see how amazing your writing is!

YEAR 2

In today's lesson, we are going to begin our own version of the story of Little Red Riding Hood. You are going to retell the story in your own words with your challenge being that you must include at least one list taht is correctly punctuated!

I have written a model below so you can see how I've managed to get them in. You may magpie some of my sentence starts but please make sure that you don't copy my writing exactly.

I have put some pictures below to help you remember the order of the story.

EXAMPLE

Once there was a young girl who lived in a beautiful, green forest with her mother. They lived in a house with a small, yellow door, square blue windows and a tall chimney. One day, Little Purple’s mum said, “Your Grandmother is poorly and I need you to take her some goodies to help cheer her up. Grab this basket and take it to your grandma please.” Little Purple peeked in the basket. Inside, were chocolate cookies, jammy dodgers, a sticky toffee cake, some delicious looking doughnuts and a large, golden fruit pie. “How delicious that all looks,” thought Little Purple, licking her lips. She grabbed the basket and off she trotted. As she skipped down the path, two eyes watched her greedily. It was the Big Bad Pig and he was hungry!

ENGLISH

YEAR 1

ENGLISH

In today’s lesson we are going to practise our phonics sound and our spellings to begin with. Why not try writing your spellings out as fast as you can? How many times can you write the same spelling out in one minute?

Then, we are going to look at the PAST tense. You will need to make sure you understand what a verb is to know how to change sentences to the past tense.

Listen really carefully to Miss Browne as she explains it.

https://www.thenational.academy/year-1/english/to-understand-how-to-use-the-past-tense-year-1-wk5-3

Then have a go at the task below.

Print the sheet HERE

YEAR 2

Today we are going to look a little more at sentences with lists in them.

Yesterday, you used commas to separate items in a list. Today, I would like you to turn those sentences into descriptive sentences using noun phrases. They might look something like this:

In my basket I have 6 shiny, red apples, 3 large melons, 4 juicy kiwis and a box of sweet strawberries.

You can improve the ones that you wrote yesterday or use the lists that I gave you yesterday and write new sentences using descriptive noun phrases.

Once you've had a go at those sentences, have a go at today's challenge.

You can print the sheet HERE

MINI ADVENTURE

In today's lesson, we are going to discover some fantastic facts about penguins. Have a look at the powerpoint below. As you read it, make notes or draw pictures to help you remember the penguin facts.

PRINT PENGUIN PPT HERE

I would like you to spend 2 days making a penguin presentation. You can do this however you'd like to. You might draw a picture and label the penguin with facts. You might make a model penguin and add facts to them. You could make an Antarctic scene with penguins swimming about in it and facts posted on icebergs. The choice is yours! Below, are some model ideas for penguins that you might find useful.

Today's focus should be on the research. Tomorrow, make your Antarctic scene or model penguin etc and add the facts to it. I would really LOVE to see some of your finsihed projects. Have fun!

Today we continue with our multiplication journey by looking at arrays. An array is a fab way of working out a multiplication calculation as it shows us that we can use the numbers either way around and we still reach the same answer e.g.

These apples show 4 x3 (4 apples, 3 times) but it can also show 3 x 4 (3 apples in 4 columns)

Follow the White Rose video (lesson 2, use arrays) to find out more.

https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-2/

Then have a go at the tasks below.

You can print both sheets HERE

ENGLISH

YEAR 2

WARM UP

Play on TTRockstars for 15 minutes. Remember, if you have lost your login, drop me a quick email and I’ll send you the information again.

This week, we will be revising multiplication.

Remember, multiplication is like adding a number over and over again. So If I bought three pairs of socks and wanted to know how many I’d bought all together, I could write an addition number sentence and a multiplication number sentence.

2 + 2 + 2 = 6 OR 2 x 3 = 6

Follow the lesson on the BBC website, then have a go at the sheet below.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zhchscw

You can find the answers on a link on the BBC site too.

ENGLISH

YEAR 1

Today we are going to look at a non fiction text. It is an information text all about a T-Rex. How exciting! We will begin with today’s spellings This week’s sound is the sound oo, ew, u-e and our spellings are based around that sound.

Look at them carefully when it gets to the right place on the video and remember to say them out loud.

Now, Follow Miss Browne as she takes you through the text about the T-Rex then have a go at the comprehension questions.

You can print these on a sheet if you'd like to.

YEAR 2

Before we look at our text, let's have a look at this week's spellings.

Look at them carefully then try to write them out without looking. Check them once you've written it. How did you get on? Have another go. Cover the spelling, write it down, check it!

This week, we are going to look at the traditional story of Little Red Riding Hood. In today's lesson, I would like you to read the story carefully then answer the comprehension questions about it. There are three different levels. Make sure you choose one that you can read confidently but is a little bit challenging too!

You can print the comprehensions HERE
