English
At Amington Heath Primary School it is our aim that children are surrounded by a rich, literate environment and are taught with skill and enthusiasm.
We endeavour to foster and develop the interaction of all English skills needed for self-expression and effective communication.
Using our school scheme of work and the teaching objectives set out in the National Literacy Strategy Framework and the National Curriculum, we plan appropriate and purposeful activities for all our pupils.

Science
At Amington Heath Community School we emphasise a safe practical approach and try to develop scientific concepts by building on existing knowledge with investigations where possible.
We encourage children to research their own ideas outside school and continue to be pleased with the enthusiastic response that is generated by our science activities.

Design and Technology

Design and technology work in the school covers all aspects of the design process. this ranges from investigating the requirements of products, through looking at materials and creating the design, right up to evaluating the finished product.
The QCA units are utilised in the planning of the work, and give a range of activities to develop skills across the key stages.

Religious Education
Through teaching R.E. at Amington Heath we hope to help children understand and interpret the importance of religion in people's lives.
We hope to make our children aware of different views and experiences of people and help them to respect diversity.
We would like to bring religion alive but we have limited exciting resources to stimulate the children. We are beginning to build up a resource bank of artefacts from different faiths for interactive activities. If you have any such resources, ideas or experiences to share please let us know.

Geography
Most pupils love this subject. Younger pupils make use of the school grounds and local area. Older pupils study localities in Britain and abroad. Pupils like to contribute to resource packs on localities. The areas studied include Aswan in Egypt, Brixham in Devon, Chembakoli in India, the Greek island of Corfu and Central London. Any maps, postcards or pictures of these areas are always gratefully received.
The school has a reasonable collection of maps but any extra maps, out of date or not, will always be put to good use.
The school uses Information Technology to a great extent in Geography. Databases are used to compare weather and climate. Mapwork programs such as Map Detectives are used for co-ordinate and map symbol work. The Web is used to a great extent.
The school takes part in many initiatives. Pupils contributed to 'Window on the World' and 'You Speak, We'll Listen' initiatives.
The geography co-ordinator has produced a locality study resource which can be found at - http://www.amingtonheath.staffs.sch.uk/5webs/brixham/index.html. This includes several linked websites for use by Primary aged pupils. The localities covered are Brixham in Devon, UK and Tamworth, Staffordshire, UK. If you look on the Virtual Teacher's Centre and look at resources submitted by teachers you will find more material to support this topic.

History
History teaching at Amington Heath is particularly aimed at gaining pupils' interest and motivating them to find out things themselves. Pupils are involved from an early age in looking at artefacts and primary and secondary sources. They use the school museum where they can handle real and reproduction artefacts.
If anybody has anything which they are discarding which will be of use in Key Stage 1 or 2 history topics the school will be pleased to receive them.
History teaching is greatly aided by the use of Information Technology. The World-Wide Web is a good sources of information. Pupils are taught, however, to assess information they get from these sources for suitability and to consider the point of view they were written from. Some simulations are used, especially on the topic on Tudors and world War II. Multimedia packages have also been made for local history topics.
Pupils have worked on a contribution to a Millennium Timeline organised for inclusion on the Staffordshire Learning Net (SLN). The school worked on the years 830 to 835.

Creative Arts
We continue to hold a firm belief that children should experience a broad and balanced curriculum and the Creative Arts play an important part in this, helping to build the cultural, aesthetic and spiritual blocks which develop the whole child.
Music, art, drama and dance are taught following the National curriculum throughout both Key Stages in half termly topics. A variety of performing artists are invited to the school to support learning in the creative arts and across other curriculum areas: sculptor, theatre and dance groups, puppeteers, poets. etc.. Children are taken to a variety of live performances. Over the years they have the opportunity to learn to play percussion instruments, recorder, guitar, violin, clarinet, trombone, French horn and trumpet
